Website steps

If you decide not to use our service*, the following is an indication of some of the steps you will need to go through to get on the world wide web and make the most of being there.
You will need to:
This is the name that uniquely identifies you on the Internet. Your address is an important first step and can be a tricky one. It should be one that identifies you or your service. First you choose your name, then your extension eg .com or .co.uk. (There are many more). Then you have to see if it is available.
It is likely that you will have to do a large number of checks for different domain names as frequently the ones you want are already gone. Once you find a domain name that is available you should check to see if it was used previously and what sort of reputation that domain name had. Why ruin your reputation before you start?
You may wish to register additional extensions so that others cannot piggy back on what will be your success or again to protect your reputation. You have to decide the name it should be registered in and maybe the administration contact for that domain.
You can register separately from the hosting package but it may be cheaper and easier to register it through your host with their package.
This will have to be regularly re-registered and paid for, usually every one or two years, unless this is automatically done by the host.
This is when the fun really begins. Whose servers you are going to use to get onto the web? Which package? What price? How long to sign up for? How far ahead can you think about what you will need?
Do you know what your requirements will be 6 months - 2 years down the line? Can you upgrade or downgrade if you need to? What support is available? What is their up-time? Will they re-register your domain name for you or will you have to do this?
Making the site.
Now the big question! Who is going to design the site, updating and redesigning it when necessary?
How much time will they have to put into doing this?
How much are they going to charge?
Will they charge by the hour or by the task?
You need to decide what should go on your web site: Your colours, your style, how your site should look for your target demographic. What substance your site should have.
Search engine optimisation. (SEO).
This is another biggie! There are numerous companies who can help with this (for a price), with a variety of packages and strategies, or you may decide to go it alone. Your first aim is to be shown on the relevant search engines, including the relevant data for your site to be found.
Perhaps you have the knowledge, confidence and motivation to take all this on yourself. Well done if you do! But do you have the time?
Would your time be spent more profitably and effectively doing what you do best for your business and letting someone else take on this role?
There may be more things to think about, but these are plenty to be going on with. The more you investigate your options, the more questions you will raise.
Don’t forget a good website is never finished. There will always be ways of improving or updating your website.
